The customer provided some unique pieces that are not found anywhere. The intent: a Navy SEAL meets Game of Thrones coffee table. Four 50 caliber machine gun barrels were cut to length and provided for use, additionally, two brass corner pieces were explosively shaped using advanced demolition techniques. Upon receiving the items, to say that "I was excited about the build", would be an understatement.
I had not decided on a material for the tables surface. Yukon Lumber is a world class lumber yard. Over the years, we have become friends. They look out for me and show me anything special. After explaining the build, they showed me some mahogany that had just arrived. Once I was able to examine the wood, I immediately texted the images to a customer. It was a single 11' long, 19" wide, 3" thick (12 quarter) mahogany. It was begging to show its potential. We shaped the wood the show off it's beauty. We finally glued it up and started with the Nautical Steel Banding inlay. It took some time, but was worth it. Once we completed the inlay, and the initial coats of antique oil. We started the painstaking hand rubbed finish process.
The hand forged steel banding was cut, drilled and shaped to fit the mahogany contour. It was fastened to the table with copper fasteners. Prior to installation, we coated it with the first of many UV resistant lacquer coats. It fit snugly in the chiseled mahogany channel.
The brass required finess. We needed to break the material at a 90 degree angle and not snap the material. Although soft, this grade of brass is very brittle. We also needed to protect the explosively formed surface. We could have easily removed all that character and had a pristine brass corner piece. The brass had a story to tell, we needed to help tell that story. Upon completion, the brass plate was attached with copper fasteners.
There is also two stainless steel corner brackets. They were cleaned and coated with lacquer. Installation was completed with copper fasteners.
